brinbellway.wordpress.com --> wp.brinbellway.net

It's still wordpress.com underneath, but now with the right to move to a new provider at will. brinbellway.wordpress.com URLs will redirect to their wp.brinbellway.net equivalents (and I intend to maintain that, even if I move providers), so old-style links will not break for the foreseeable future, but please use the new-style ones from now on.

Note that brinbellway.net *without* the "wp." on the front still redirects to Dreamwidth. I may be able to arrange a distinct landing page for brinbellway.net if this is too confusing.

---

I thought I wasn't allowed to do this on my current subscription, but either I'd misread the fine print or they've since expanded the list of benefits of the lowest premium tier: this actually cost me zero marginal dollars. If it was an expansion on Automattic's part, it was a smart move: I'd have left wordpress.com otherwise.

Finally, here you are. At the delcot of tondam, where doshes deave. But the doshery lutt is crenned with glauds.

Glauds! How rorm it would be to pell back to the bewl and distunk them, distunk the whole delcot, let the drokes uncren them.

But you are the gostak. The gostak distims the doshes. And no glaud will vorl them from you.

(As for the experience of attempting to *understand* it, it reminds me rather of reading French. "[???] the card on your head and walk [???] [???] the table. If it doesn't fall, [lose?] $1000."

(When we salvaged our bilingual version of that game, the English and French decks had gotten all jumbled together, and rather than sift them out we just went "what the hell, it'll be educational" and played with a shuffled English/French deck.))

This is my 100th Dreamwidth post.

Today is the second anniversary of my first shift at my job.

Today, I formatted my 1,000th chronological Wordpress post. (there have also been a couple hundred I skipped ahead to do, as they came up)

(Though since my new DW images are sharing storage space with my Tumblr backup, I *am* worried I'm going to run out of media-storage space on my account, after 7+ years of Tumbling. I've mentioned in Tumblr tags a couple times that I'm a lot more reluctant to reblog posts with images now, proportionately to how many images and how many frames they have: I have to think about whether it's worth the space.)

(For those of you who don't know, I invented the laugh rule. (Quite possibly other people in other places have invented it independently, but from the timeline of events† I strongly suspect that every laugh-rule-using rationalist can trace it back to me.) It's been very gratifying to see other people picking it up, to see the positive impact I've had on the community, to know I've inspired people to make the world a bit more joyful.)

So, I was clearing out my Wordpress spamtrap today. *Most* of it was just ads for casinos and stock-trading and call girls (as they put it), the usual crap.

But one of them was a bot that saw the number of duplicate (botched incremental backup) and near-duplicate (reblog chains that I participated in multiple times) posts, *assumed I was an SEO scraper bot*, and offered to sell me software to make me look more person-like.

First, my linking policy: from now on, I submit all links I use to the Internet Archive. Roundup links will include Wayback alternatives where possible; for regular links, I won't provide the Wayback version, but if you ask them--and the page permitted their crawlers--they'll give it to you.

There's a prepper saying: "one is none, and two is one". Having "none" of a link isn't a dealbreaker--I won't refuse to link uncrawlable pages--but I will strive to have at least "one" of every link I give you.

(Also, I tossed the Internet Archive $10. I had USD$10 lying around in my Paypal balance from experiments with new forms of menial Internet labour, and I figure this way I get to help fund their good work *and* avoid Paypal's ridiculous foreign-exchange fees on depositing it into my bank. (Did you know there's, like, a fucking arms race between [Canadians who get paid in USD] and Paypal, where Canadians try to withdraw their balances into USD-denominated bank accounts and Paypal tries to stop them? I'd rather not have to join the arms race myself, nor do I want to give up and eat the fees.))

On the other hand if I were a junior banker and police cars with flashing lights suddenly converged on my bank’s headquarters, the temptation to stand up and start yelling “shred everything!” would be incredibly powerful. Like you definitely, definitely want to be standing over a shredder feeding it takeout menus when the cops arrived on your floor. I suppose it is for the best that I am no longer in banking.
brin_bellway: forget-me-not flowers (Default)
Possibly Wordpress's (temporary?) removal of incremental Tumblr imports (it's now one-per-person) wasn't just to deal with overwhelming demand. There are a whole lot of duplicate posts in my Wordpress archive (I had 3,750 Tumblr posts at time of last import, yet I have over 6k Wordpress posts), and while I don't know for sure, "failed to properly skip already-imported posts while performing an 'incremental' import" seems the obvious answer for why.

Worst part is that, when using the "previous post" and "next post" buttons, it mostly skips the duplicates. I didn't even notice they were there until I tried to return to a post and hit the (non-cleaned formatting) duplicate instead. I'll have to work from the per-month archives instead of directly going from post to post.

(Still, better too many copies than not enough.)
