[mild cw: apocalypse] [The Prepared; Wayback] (by Josh Centers) Ever wanted to email people over a radio transceiver? (Since you're reading *my* blog, I'm guessing you probably have.) Turns out it's possible! Takes hundreds of dollars of equipment, a ham license, a pain-in-the-ass setup process, and an agreement not to use encryption of any kind when communicating this way, but if you're sufficiently determined it *can* be done!

(Am *I* sufficiently determined? Not at the moment. A future me with less on her plate might be, though, if a better method hasn't come along by then.)

There is a blanket [cw: illness] on the rest of this post.

Not sure why (and if anyone knows a fix, please let me know), but starting on what was apparently May 24th, tumblr-utils gets stuck trying to scrape [tumblr.com profile] best-of-amenta. If--as I do--you have a cron job with multiple sequential scrapes in which best-of-amenta happens to be first on the list, it might get stuck hard enough that it never gets around to the other commands in the job, and *all* of your Tumblr backups will fail to update.

Also, while I'm at it ("it" = tinkering with my use of tumblr-utils), don't use the --tag-index flag if any of the tags on the blog you're scraping contains a slash: it crashes.

Speaking of social media, yesterday I was looking at somebody's Twitter and in the trending-tags sidebar was "#purpleandproud".

First thought: "since when does Twitter have an Amenta RP?"

Second thought: "is this something about bipartisanship?"

Third thought: "there are so many things this could mean, and now I am curious which of the myriad possibilities it is. *clicks*"

Apparently it's celebrating the anniversary of the founding of the University of Western Ontario, whose signature colour is purple. How the hell anyone is supposed to guess that is beyond me, but maybe not being guessable is part of the point. Curiosity got *me* to click, after all.

First, my linking policy: from now on, I submit all links I use to the Internet Archive. Roundup links will include Wayback alternatives where possible; for regular links, I won't provide the Wayback version, but if you ask them--and the page permitted their crawlers--they'll give it to you.

There's a prepper saying: "one is none, and two is one". Having "none" of a link isn't a dealbreaker--I won't refuse to link uncrawlable pages--but I will strive to have at least "one" of every link I give you.

(Also, I tossed the Internet Archive $10. I had USD$10 lying around in my Paypal balance from experiments with new forms of menial Internet labour, and I figure this way I get to help fund their good work *and* avoid Paypal's ridiculous foreign-exchange fees on depositing it into my bank. (Did you know there's, like, a fucking arms race between [Canadians who get paid in USD] and Paypal, where Canadians try to withdraw their balances into USD-denominated bank accounts and Paypal tries to stop them? I'd rather not have to join the arms race myself, nor do I want to give up and eat the fees.))

On the other hand if I were a junior banker and police cars with flashing lights suddenly converged on my bank’s headquarters, the temptation to stand up and start yelling “shred everything!” would be incredibly powerful. Like you definitely, definitely want to be standing over a shredder feeding it takeout menus when the cops arrived on your floor. I suppose it is for the best that I am no longer in banking.
