For the moment my sleep schedule and job are such that I can oversleep and still not be late to work, but I don't expect this to keep being the case a couple years (potentially just a few months) down the line.
Therefore, last night I tried out Sleep Cycle. I figure the best time to test alarm clocks is when you don't need them, so that when you *do* need one you know where to go.
Even though I tested it on the spare smartphone (which is left plugged in all the time; I hear this degrades the battery), the phone only lost 30% charge overnight: I think "make sure to leave it plugged in" is an ass-covering measure. Mind you, we kept the spare phone in large part because it runs so cool (making it good for videos), plus it was in airplane mode.
My bedside table is *behind* my bed and cannot be moved†: thinking the orientation and headboard might interfere with microphone mode, I put it in accelerometer mode and placed it under the sheet next to my pillow. I set it for 8:20 - 8:50.
First-night result: the second or third time that I woke up on my own, the phone informed me that it was 8:24 and I should not be fooled by the dreariness of the morning into going back to sleep. Nice to have it pointing that out to me, although I would *probably* have checked my watch and found out regardless. We'll have to wait for it to actually wake me up for a proper test.

†I have a loft bed: my "bedside table" is the shelf above my closet.
