"Hey, I tried to hex this person using the name they put down on that credit-card application, but it didn't work."

"Oh, yeah, probably they disidentify with their legal name, that can mess it up."

"What should I do, then?"

A tweet from @bmo, official Twitter account of the Bank of Montreal, dated April 18th. 'True Name™ by Mastercard gives trans and non-binary customers the ability to have their chosen name on their card. It's just one more way BMO makes banking feel secure, for everyone. #BMOPride spr.ly/6017Ksfn3'

(Like, I get the idea, but "True Name™" feels like such a creepy phrasing? It reminds me of those urban-fantasy stories where the Fair Folk run coffeeshops in order to bait people into giving out their names.)

Yeahhhhh, I have NEVER seen "true name" used in other than a magical/superstitious context before. Maybe it was the only relevant phrase that wasn't already trademarked? I do know that New York recently passed a law where cell phone companies have to offer the option for a preferred name and pronouns, so we've had a couple trainings on that at work. I don't know if the law also included other companies like credit card providers, but I wouldn't be surprised.
