how the *fuck* did it take me this long to realise what a great source of COVID-19-related post titles "The Cruelest Year" is

(*how* did I not title *any* of my essential-worker ventposts "The mangled wreckage of our lives entwined")

Like, I know that's not what it's about. All of my 2010s selves are telling me that that's definitely not what it's about.

And yet...it *works*, doesn't it?

I always interpreted the bitterness in "But the course is run/The damage done/The slate wiped clean again" as bitter *resolve*, an acknowledgement that it's too late to change anything and all we can do is move forward. But it occurs to me now that it might also be bitter *sarcasm*, at people pretending it's over when "many more still in the balance hung".

(People generally *don't* pretend it's over around here, but I gather that's not true everywhere.)
