sophus) A Dreamwidth guide for Tumblrites. I think I might adopt the "stickied post for use as a askbox/[ping delivery station]" method, and paid accounts are more useful than I thought. (Maybe next year: it's too soon for me to be willing to drop money on this.)
[cw: poverty] [Dreamwidth; Wayback] (by

theunitofcaring) Reflections on Vimes Boot Theory. As someone who (is part of an economic unit that) is literally on their third car in two years because the second one turned out to have a fraudulent safety certificate†, I particularly feel that example. (since we paid upfront, there was no hit to Dad's credit score but there *was* a big hit to his bank account) First thing I'm doing if I ever get ahold of a sufficiently large chunk of money is getting a Prius V. (the most fuel efficient of the non-luxury cars with enough cargo space and range to pull off a New York trip; I also particularly feel the bit about how useful an aptitude for researching can be, though I have still not managed to turn up anything about whom one contacts in order to nail an oathbreaking Ontarian safety inspector's ass to the wall)
(I disagree that you should value your time at your wage, though. Economists talk about opportunity cost, but they also talk about reasoning at the margins, and as I understand it few jobs actually allow for marginal labour. The *marginal* hourly wage, the amount of money you'd make if you decided to work a single additional hour beyond what you'd otherwise have done, is generally about $1. (Not to mention the mental energy it takes to force yourself through such tedious and switchbacky labour, unless you are
another_normal_anomaly and do it for fun.) (*Parts* of Swagbucks are fairly easy, but the *marginal* parts are not.))

†The safety inspector was a real person who really had a safety-inspector license and really wrote that certificate, but they were lying when they wrote it.
