[arguably cw: illness]
Today is the anniversary of my first shift. I've been at my job for five years.
Despite all my complaints, overall I am grateful. It's let me keep food on our table. It's given me the safety net of knowing that even if I leave for greener pastures, I can always walk in and ask for my job back and be granted it in a heartbeat: the boss loves hiring known quantities, and in fact maintains an alumni network of people who can be convinced to occasionally come in and cover a shift. (I'll likely take him up on it.)
(It's not even significant germ exposure anymore: I once thought I'd never be allowed to mask at work in a million years, but it turned out a million years was two and two-third years and the increased cold rate I experienced when I first began working outside the home has been thoroughly solved.)
Forty thousand dollars makes a lot of difference.
