The comments on tomatoes are interesting. They grow pretty well here (midwest USA) but I haven’t noticed them being particularly better than store bought — though that may be because I have a strong preference for cooked-to-death tomatoes and by the time they’re paste the difference between store bought and home grown is probably minimal.

We have a fence which protects them okay. I’ve heard they grow pretty well in the Aerogarden but one of appropriate size is pretty pricey and the varieties for the aerogarden are going to be bred for size so I can’t say anything about taste.

I just mentioned it because if you're growing inside you're not going to get critters or temperature issues, unless your pets find the plants tasty.

It's essentially a kratky method jar with a pump and timer/lights. While they do sell a lot of stuff and it is a bit pricey, once you get the cages you can buy your own grow media/seeds/fertilizer and they do work -- you just have to make sure the plant is correctly sized for the model, like a dwarf variety.

I have a hard time remembering fertilizer so I've finally been successful growing stuff with it. There's a reason why I prefer cats to houseplants -- cats won't let you forget to feed them.
