Doctor Who, part 3

(part 1; part 2)

After looking over the results of the scheduling survey, I've decided to hold further rewatches on Mondays at 01:30 UTC.

(Some relevant translations:
Eastern Canada/US: Sundays at 9:30 PM
Central Australia: Mondays at 11 AM)

To simplify matters slightly (or at least spread out the complexity more evenly), we will *not* be observing Daylight Savings Time. This way each person is running no more than one correction layer on their timezone-conversion mental widget at any given time: otherwise you get weird shit like [double-DST in Australia, which doesn't even kick in all at once]. The converted times given above are valid for this week: please keep an eye out for timekeeping changes in your area, and adjust accordingly.

In other simplification news, a stream of the episode will be available via Twitch. (After an hour of troubleshooting I couldn't even get Discord to successfully *launch* on Windows, let alone get screen-sharing to work. Meanwhile, Twitch took maybe 10 - 15 minutes and didn't require switching operating systems.) Please continue to use the Discord for chatting, *not* the Twitch chat.

This week, we will be starting over at "Rose" to give other people a chance to join in. Future rewatches will proceed at the pace of one episode per week (even when that means watching half of a two-parter); additional rewatches (such as to catch up on one you missed) may be possible upon request.

Hope to see you there!

Doctor Who followup

Of the four other people who expressed interest, three couldn't make this timeslot.

While two people is enough that we were able to go ahead with the test run, I'd like to form a more inclusive schedule. If you're interested in attending, please fill out this survey. Make sure to set the location to your own timezone, and to press "Send Response" when you're done. (Almost missed that bit myself.)

An experiment

If you recognise and have non-negative associations with my username, you are invited to a group watching of Doctor Who (2005).

Time: Tuesday, September 10th, 2019, 23:30 UTC (Edit: WolframAlpha's geolocator seems like it might be outputting New York regardless of where you actually live. Please replace "in local time" with "in [insert name of a location in your timezone here]".)

Location: this Discord server

Episode: 1x01, "Rose"

How to obtain: I chose Doctor Who in large part because I suspect a lot of people already know where they personally can best get a copy, but if not, here's some possibilities:

  • Amazon Prime Video

  • Library and other rental DVDs

  • Some place called Britbox (I did not get far enough into the free trial to see if they demand a credit card for it)

  • UK Netflix but not America, Canada, or Australia (unless you region-hack it, which I have never done but have heard is possible; we here at Brinens and Things like Windscribe for proxy services)

  • Various shady websites, which we here at Brinens and Things cannot officially endorse and which you use at your own risk

If you're interested but can't make it because of logistical issues (can't be there at that time, can't obtain the episode), let me know: I might do another one of the same episode at some time more/different people can make, and if there's demand I'll poke at the rather intimidating-looking process of Discord video streaming and see if I can get it to work right.

Replying to let me know you *can* make it is optional.
