They keep on assuring me that I still have the right to return home, and like, dude, I *am* home, fuck you.

Americans, at least in my experience, do not call their own country "the States". *Canadians* call it "the States". As such, I call America "the States" when I wish to distance myself from it and emphasise my Canadianness instead.
