We have better options than vocal cords

[mild cw: illness, food]

I love living in a place with ~100% adult literacy rates.

If I'm in a noisy environment saying difficult-to-guess things through the muffling and lip-movement-obscuring of a respirator to people who aren't used to parsing my (not easy to understand at the best of times) speech, I often *don't* have to try to force my way through all those obstacles! I can just walk up to an employee, say "Hi!", show them my clipboard with my [question]/[request] written on the back of a grocery list, and they peer at it for a bit and then [answer the question]/[either do the thing or explain why they can't]! It's so great!

A sheet of paper with four handwritten paragraphs. The first three paragraphs have been scribbled out, but are still readable with effort. First: 'I'm here to pick up prescriptions for [redacted].' Second: 'Also, I would like one bottle of ferrous fumarate, please.' Third: 'Do you have any more Lindt Excellence 90% bars in the back?' Fourth: 'I would like one case of 890mL Hellmann's mayo. Can you help me get it down from the top shelf, please?'
