Times Square livestream reactionblogging

[mild cw: illness]

Well, I say "live". It was mostly hovering around a 2:20 delay, and never less than 1:30 or so. We held our own countdown in the living room at 11:59:50, and then a couple minutes later we watched theirs. At least it didn't crash outright at 11:59 this year: they're getting better. Someday they'll catch up with the quality of TV broadcasts, and hopefully it'll still cost a lot less then.

Remember that post about the indescribable emotion you get when you receive your official NASA hand-sanitiser swag? I'm feeling that emotion by proxy about the official Times Square New Year's Eve party's sparkly pink-and-purple masks.

---

I was surprised they were *having* a party, since I'd heard it was "closed to the public". I never caught the bit where they explicitly explained what was going on, but judging from some of the stuff they mentioned in partygoer interviews about "heroes" and "nominations", I *think* they held a raffle restricted to vouched-for essential workers. Which is an interesting way of doing it.

(If you won, you got a socially-distanced box in Times Square for your household to hang out in.)

You now have the context to appreciate this wonderful hilarious clip:

though the inflatable dancer should have had a painted-on mask

"Maskless lead singer with masked backup dancers (specifically, dancers wearing a uniform where the mask is clearly designed as part of the uniform)" feels heavily loaded with symbolism, but symbolising *what* I'm not entirely sure.
