This song was woven all through my dreams this morning, and I woke up with it stuck in my head.
I wondered why. Why *this* song? And then while contemplating the song I felt a pang of longing, and it occurred to me:
The day I first heard this song, the day I associate with this song?
It was the last time I went exploring in a shopping district. In November.
God knows when I'll ever be able to do *that* again. It's normal for me to take winters off, but winter is on its way out now, and this year that isn't enough.

I've already thought about that song in the past as an example of serendipity. I came so close to never hearing it, if I hadn't happened to step inside that particular used-clothing store to see if it had anything interesting (decent sweatpants?) at that particular time. That would have been a shame: it's a very good song.
Overall, I don't approve of background radios†. Overall--in this day and age--I don't approve of poking around shops just to see what items and amenities are available, just for enrichment. But I think part of me wonders what new song I'd have heard, what new things I'd have discovered, if I'd been able to go out to play last week.

†They're frequently overstimulating at the best of times, and make the world unnecessarily dangerous for people with music-related triggers (*cough*). Also, our narrowcasting tech is so good these days that there's really no need for broadcasting: even if 90% of the population prefers background music, they can just wear headphones and leave the rest of us alone. (They're free to coordinate on which station to listen to, if they want the comradery of listening together: I imagine a world where rather than playing radio themselves, grocery stores post a sign at the front with a recommended station for your personal radio.)
