Cultural translation note, since it occurs to me that most of you likely wouldn't have the context to catch the connotation there:
Americans, at least in my experience, do not call their own country "the States". *Canadians* call it "the States". As such, I call America "the States" when I wish to distance myself from it and emphasise my Canadianness instead.
